Structured Wiring is the backbone to your homes communication & entertainment systems. Without it you will not experience the true quality today's high tech equipment or systems will produce. It is now commonly referred to as being the fourth utility. It's no longer an option or nice to havething. It's a necessity for today and tomorrow's technology!

wire systemsStructured Wiring Systems (SWS) Your Fourth Utility:
SWS will take their place alongside gas, electric, and phone services as the “fourth utility.” You know what the first three utilities are – electrical power, gas, and telephone. If SWS
become that “fourth utility,” what will they do? Simply put, they manage and distribute audio, video, voice, and data throughout the house. They often include additional components for
whole house audio & video distribution, intercom systems, home automation, home theater, surround sound, home security and surveillance camera monitoring, and surge protection.

System Components:
A panel box, similar to the electrical service box that distributes the home’s AC wiring, serves as the SWS’s “nerve center.” It typically will contain modules for networking voice, data, video, and audio signals in the home – as well as modules that interface with other home systems (such as a thermostat or the security control system). High-capacity cabling, including unshielded twisted copper pairs (UTP) and coaxial cable, is run from the panel box to strategically placed, phone, video, and data jacks mounted in wall plates throughout the home.

Unlike AC wiring, which is daisy-chained or run in a parallel fashion, individual cables are run from each wall plate directly back to the panel box – “home run” wiring (or “star” topology).

Homeowners can choose between a smaller media enclosure that supports basic/essential networking technologies – and a larger enclosure that supports advanced or enhanced home office and home entertainment systems. With basic system wiring in place, those picking the smaller system will be able to upgrade later.

Cabling & Wall Outlets:
In residential SWS, old-fashioned telephone lines are out, and Category 5 or Category 5e (the “e” designates the enhanced version) are in. Cat 5e cable consists of four pairs of twisted wires inside a single cable jacket. The twisting reduces “noise,” or electrical interference, on the wires. Cat 5e cable carries phone signals, but also offers the bandwidth (signal-carrying capacity) required for high-speed Internet connections and cable or DSL modems.

A second type of cabling, RG6 coaxial cable, also is installed throughout the home, distributing broadcast, cable, and satellite TV; DVD; VCR; security cameras; and other video signals. Cat 5e and RG6 cables are terminated in each room at wall outlets featuring snap-in jacks and connectors designed for high-quality data, telephone, audio, and video signals. The snap-in design allows the wall outlets to be easily reconfigured to accommodate future connectivity needs.

wireless installationInternet Access:
Homeowners generally want to share access to the Internet and network computers in the home (and home office) with printers and other peripherals around the home. A 10Base-T networking module, the most basic, allows users to do all of this.

An Internet gateway (router) allows multiple users to share access to a single, secure Internet connection – creating a private home network. An Internet gateway typically operates at an increased speed of 100 Base-T, known as “fast Ethernet.”

Gateways support the higher speed sharing of data and peripheral devices, such as printers, among many computer users in the home – along with commonly shared media files including MP-3 audio and MPEG video. High-speed networking also is ideal for shared applications such as video gaming.

Entertainment Systems:
Entertainment SystemsAn integrated, whole-house entertainment system can be created, using audio modules installed in the panel box. These modules take advantage of the multi-room, multisource feature available in typical home theater stereo receivers, allowing homeowners to distribute stereo throughout the house. Volume controls – for rooms with in-wall or ceiling speakers – have the stylish look of popular light dimmers.

Advanced audio/video capabilities can be added. These combine audio and video signal distribution in a single unit using Cat 5/5e cable to send audio CD jukebox and MP-3 files from a PC or Internet audio device (as well as audio/video from a VCR, DVD, cable TV, satellite, and security camera signals throughout the home).

Cat 5/5e cable distributes audio without the distortion and quality loss common to AV cables when run over long distances. It also provides superior quality to modulated signals sent over coax –at about one-tenth the cost of traditional AV cables.

Available video modules can distribute a multitude of video sources (digital and standard cable TV, satellite TV, DVD or VCR, and security camera signals). The modules also
boost the video signal strength of cable TV signals.
